No one can motivate you
No one can motivate you. Although they sure do try. For example, with money 💲.
And I'm not saying that it doesn't work. But they will not motivate you. You will not be happier either more committed nor believe more in the company's mission. Far from it.
If as a leader you always use economical bonus to motivate your team, you are making them assimilate the formula: objective-reward. That means you are developing a culture where:
- The team will not help each other: they will be selfish because they only want to achieve their goals.
- No one will be committed to the company. Don't explain them about vision or values. They will not care about anything other than money.
- It will only work in the short term. The employees will join another company where they will get higher economic incentive to meet the objectives.
❌ No cometas el error de etiquetar a alguien con este concepto abstracto de «desmotivado» para evitar afrontar los problemas reales. Pregúntate el motivo porqué ese alguien no está «motivado». It may be that they don't feel heard, that they think they are undervalued, that they need training, etc. If it's any of that, do something. If they definitely don't fit in with the company's culture or values, you hired them, take responsability, and help them find an alternative in another company where they can fit in.
💡 💡 We cannot motivate, but we can inspire. We have to make the people in our team feel that:
- They are contributing to the company's purpose and vision
- They are important
- They are heard
With this, you will be able to motivate a team and also when an offer comes from another company giving them more money, they will reject it because they will prefer to stay with their colleagues in their positive work environment.
Not everything is money.
